Smaug's Eye
This Smaug's eye and the picture I've been using since my frost dragon eye didn't work. I've mostly craving into the clay though I used other styles of creating my dragon's eye like pressing into the clay with my tools creating a relief for the scales. I'm also creating representational.
Hi Everyone,
This is an update for my plaster case project. The design for my trilobite is going good so far, it has a conceptual design of a fossil which is what I am looking for. It obviously is a representation of an ancient animal called a trilobite, at least I hope I made it look as such.
This is a reference image of what I am trying to make. I have a photo of the actual project but I couldn't get it on here in time.
This photo here is another good one I was trying to mostly copy. I like the texture of this one more than the first photo. It has a more smooth design that I like.

This is more of what i am going for i am going to CARVE out a background of a Sunset and the Oceans horizon. Hopefully the CASTING Comes out smooth but if not i sill Sand out the bumps and errors. and with her Tail i want to find a small hole netting and create a PATTERNED Texture.

After imprinting my hands in the clay, most of what I have left to do is in carving the heart from what is remaining. In this case the formal design of the piece is very important because it should be immediately recognizable.
A couple class periods ago I made this box which I have since covered in duct tape in order to make it as water resistant as possible. There is a technical aspect to this kind of art which is relatively new to me. I have not previously had to build separate components for a piece which will not be seen or appreciated, but it's still an important part of the crafting process.
Hi Katie,
I'm working on the head of a king cobra with its open because I wanted to show its fangs coming out. It has a great sense of texture on its scales and on its head plus different representional patterns on the king cobra. I'm still working on taping my cobra head box with the duct tape then I'll put the plaster in for the casting. I'll start with the head of it plus its eyes and mouth then do its neck plus the fangs. I'll add the pattern once there is clay in the box, about halfway inside; and make sure no water leaks out of the box.

I'm about done with my project as of last class. I picked to do my favorite guitar player's hand, which is missing his middle finger. Jerry Garcia played for the Grateful Dead and lost his finger when he was young. So, I casted my hand to look like his and I'm also carving a rose beside the hand. The rose represents a lot of the Grateful Dead songs and is an icon in the dead community. You can consider this a conceptual piece because of my specific ideas. Below are images of Jerry's hand and him himself.

Progress
Hi, Everyone...!
This is what I have so far for my plaster project. Even thou I had to “carve” several times I’m happy how It’s taking shape, and form. Also you can see the different patterns of the “texture” in the street and in the buildings, detail by detail. Even thou I've not used any object for “casting” this city, just regular tools it’s working just fine.

Hi Guys!
This is a sketch I made for my plaster project. I was thinking of something to have a conceptual design to it. Technical wise I want to add some kind of texture with sand, seashells, and or bone.
I what to try to cast it similar to fossil, because I love prehistoric creatures.
This is the reference image I was using for my project. I really like the amount of texture and detail on this animal.
~ Drew
I'm excited to start this project and I was thinking about doing my own hand or a logo. With the hand it will show great texture and I would use my hand of course. With the Grateful Dead stealie it will be a representational piece. I pick the Stealie I'll use a circle as my basic shape and then carve in the shapes. The hand will be easier and I'll probably use a square and then place my hand in the mold.

Plaster Relief Idea
This is my First Idea For the plaster i really enjoy the texture the tree in the background gives off and how soothing the tree is along with it. It just seems like a fun but yet cultural type of Technical work. To go along with the cultural looking aspect it has a relief touch.
Texture- The look of an image that leads to what it might feel like.
Technical- Display of skill with building or carving.
Relief- The piece has a meaning behind it.
My second idea was kind of more of a feminist and powerful approach gong with a Siren of the Sea in more of a Starbucks position with great hair and a trident.
Plaster Relief Concept
I want a shallow cast of hands with mostly the finger tips protruding. This will allow a base to more easily be formed behind the focus, more reminiscent of a relief sculpture. The heart I may be able to sculpt out of clay and cast it with plaster, or I will leave it as it is. The string I have from my previous project.
I don't entirely know if it's possible, but this is what I came up with brainstorming with no materials in front of me.
Hi Katie,
The idea I want for my "relief" project is the king of snakes(the king cobra). I can't decide if I should make the head of the cobra or the whole body of it. It has a good sense of texture within its scales everywhere on its body and even on the head. My idea of a king cobra is that it is formal to be made into the "relief" project that we are doing. It is a good idea to use in this project better than the cat I used for the "wired" project because it is probably easier to make.

Frost Dragon
This idea is representational of a fantasy creature from my imagination. I'm doing a casting project on a dragon theme once again. First I'll use snowflake stamps to create a relief into the clay. Second I then carve into the clay to create the eye and scales. Finally I will press into the clay with either my finger or a paperclip in order to create a texture.

Plaster Relief--- (Jose Rivera)
Hi, Katie
This is
what I have so far, I’m still debating what I want to do for this project. I
have draw this city that has like a “technical” view of stores in both sides
and in the way far, horizontal view the center of the city or town. And it has
a “conceptual” point of view of a city. Also
another idea is this second image I choose from google that it’s two hands that
has “Relief” on it. Yes, it’s a little more abstract, but it can represent
unity between two different persons in one.
Relief- a subtract method of sculpture or printmaking.
Technical- art that has to do with a specific skill set like building, standing, craftsmanship.
Conceptual- art has to do with a specific idea.

Skulls !
Here are my two ideas for "A Relief" project:
The first one is the Chinese diagram Yi Ching/Bagua Zhang, meaning loosely: the eight way path of changes. As Conceptual art, it encapsulates specific concepts in Chinese philosophy. This project would demand a lot of attention to Texture so that it maintains an artistic quality beyond simply being symbolic. My desire would be to create a Formal work of art with this design.
The second idea, much more Representational, I belive to be more visually stimulating. There will be considerably more Carving, and possibly demand more Technical skill- but it will rule! The Casting process may be more difficult on the Skulls project, but I have faith in my instructor to guide me through. :)

Progress
This is what I have so far for my project, still working on it. As I added more and more branches to my three it's staring to look more like a actual three;"Composition". On the branches as they where added one to another but also keeping "Balance" on my wire project.
Wired! Progress
The material has worked pretty closely to what I anticipated. I did several sketches initially. This is the one I went along with.
I'm pretty content with the results. Right now I am building off of the spiral base I built in class periods to add volume. I only had a vague theory of if that would work, and I'm glad it turned out.
The 'skeleton' is essentially spirals, so I am adding variety by adding other shapes and materials. I bought some colored string to weave into the metal. This is testing my knowledge of weaves and knots, but since that is a skill I hardly ever get to use, it is a fun challenge. There is repetition of the base pattern throughout the entire piece, however. I am attracted to fluidity.

Hi Katie,
This is Drew, the first image I have on this post is not my sketch. But it displays what I wanna do with my sculpture. The small chest on the second image is a chest that I own and I want to model over for my octopus to sit on, I think it gives the figure "Grouping". I think the chest gives the octopus some "Containment". Since the chest and the octopus are apart of the same theme which is the ocean, I think it provides "Repetition". Thank you and I would like to hear some feedback!
This is what I got so far here in these pictures I took from my computer's webcam. The top and middle pictures is the head of the cat that I was trying to make into 3D; just needed to add the eyes, nose and mouth and then make the neck so the head can attach to its body. The head of the cat has a sense of volume coming so it can be made into 3D than a flat 2D shape like in a drawing. I didn't make anything yet to the cat's body though I might add the feet. The legs and its body seem to have a bit of asymmetrical balance and a bit of a variety added to its size and use of contrast.
Hey guys! I did as much as work as I could this week and used all the wire I brought home. I started to get the three-dimensional shape and to get a good sense of volume. I also started to build up some mass on my object so it wasn't so flat. The hardest part I had was doing the eyes so far but they now have symmetrical balance.

Hello Katie and classmates.
I have been working on my landmass base for my project to give a sense of weight to the overall composition.
I began by chopping up some styrofoam and glueing it up with some rather expensive apoxy glue. Which didn't work because all the pieces just slid around! So I just hammered the hell out of it with some masking tape to hold everything together. That seems to be working. :)
I purchased a large bowl which will serve to contain my 3-D project. I will also offset everything within the bowl so as avoid looking too symmetrical and static.
I am looking to get some moss at Micheals too cover my land mass after I give it a base coat of olive green. I hope the complexity of layering (styrofoam, tape, spray paint, and moss) will help the final appearance to be visually interesting.
I can't seem to get my photos on this blog again. In addition to my styrofoam bundle photos I also found a couple cool reference photos from a Jet Li movie. I will e-mail them to Katie.
