I'm excited to start this project and I was thinking about doing my own hand or a logo.  With the hand it will show great texture and I would use my hand of course.  With the Grateful Dead stealie it will be a representational piece.  I pick the Stealie I'll use a circle as my basic shape and then carve in the shapes.  The hand will be easier and I'll probably use a square and then place my hand in the mold.
